Muscles Commonly Associated with Neck Pain

Neck pain often involves multiple muscles, fascia, posture, and joint movement rather than a single structure.

Our cervical evaluation is divided into three functional regions:

  • Lower Cervical Spine (C7–T1)

  • Mid Cervical Spine (C4–C6)

  • Upper Cervical Spine (Occiput–C2)

Our Approach to the  Upper Cervical Region

Step 1
Muscle & Fascia Assessment

We evaluate the muscles and fascia that influence neck movement, posture, and stability.

Step 2
Joint & Ligament Assessment

We evaluate the mobility and flexibility of the upper cervical joints, joint capsules, and supporting ligaments.

Step 3
Movement Assessment

After treatment, we reassess neck movement and the patient’s response. We compare changes in range of motion, pain or discomfort, stiffness, and ease of movement.

This helps us determine how the body responded during the session and which areas may still require further attention. Results vary depending on the individual’s condition, history, and tissue response.

Why We Assess the Upper Cervical Region

The upper cervical region plays an important role in supporting and controlling head and neck movement. Our evaluation considers the muscles, fascia, joints, and supporting soft tissues surrounding the occiput, C1, and C2.

Treatment is individualized according to each patient’s movement, tissue response, symptoms, and clinical history. Specific manual techniques and clinical decision-making are selected only after an in-person assessment.

Neck pain is rarely caused by a single structure. Our assessment considers both the muscular system and the joint–ligament complex of the upper cervical spine to better understand each patient’s movement and symptoms.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3
